Are you thinking about pole dancing? But feel like your age is too old for it? Anything done at an older age can seem daunting at first, but it is not impossible. Meet Antonella, a 56-year-old pole dancer who started pole dancing just two years ago.
Hi there! My name is Antonella and I am from Italy. I started my pole dancing journey at the age of 54 through a simple search online.
As I got older, I realized the need to be more flexible if I wanted to improve my fitness, so I started doing yoga through a mobile app.
I was very happy and proud of my progress so I wanted to explore it more. As you know how technology can be, with me looking around at yoga-related tips and tricks, I eventually discovered pole dancing. The whole pole dancing world amazed me and got me hooked instantly. I wanted to be one of them! Of course, I did have discouraging thoughts, wondering if I could handle it but I had to try before I could even think of giving up.
At the onset of the lockdown, I signed up for an online pole dance course and ordered my first pole. Despite the reality of the class setting being virtual, I never felt alone. Yes, this was a new journey but I felt the support instantly when I started. The pole dancing community was very welcoming. They never made me feel strange for starting pole dancing at an older age. Not only was it welcoming and supportive, but a safe place too. I felt safe to ask for help as I learned through pole tricks without the fear of being judged. It was exciting and encouraging to be part of a community full of people with different backgrounds, stories, ages, shapes, and sizes, whom I could easily and comfortably share my victories and failures with.
As a doctor, I’ve always focused on my health and fitness. It is important for me to find time to exercise whether it be at home, in the gym, or even after work.
I realized that pole dancing shouldn't be any different and is actually a compliment to my already active lifestyle. It is a form of fitness, after all. Staying active has no age limit! Staying healthy eventually helped me execute the beautiful tricks and shapes I used to just see and admire on my IG feed.
What I like about pole dancing is that it doesn’t require anyone to have prior experience just like any other exercise. You don’t have to be super fit to start though, being fit and healthy can follow as you regularly practice and train.
If you’re thinking about pole dancing at an old age, I definitely would recommend it! Start now by taking care of your health at an early age. Your body will thank you (more especially when you start pole dancing or any fitness routine.). It’s never too late to start. Who knows? You might find something as special as I did that you’ll endlessly love doing and a community to support you.
